It was a longer-than-usual Budget with a lot of detail and overall some pretty good news for a whole range of people. I have paid several visits to the Worthing and Brighton benefit centres this year, particularly to see how ready they were for universal credit coming into effect in Worthing and Adur as from July this year. On my last visit I took volunteers and clients from local food banks to see how the new system could benefit them and how better liaison with the benefit offices could speed things up in particular.
Locally, I am pleased to say that there appear to have been very few complaints and it certainly looks like a more streamlined service with officials from the benefits office, housing and the local council working together much better. There was also welcome news in the Budget on small business rates which will particularly benefit some of the smaller shops on the high street who are having a tough time.
I am also pleased that the UK is taking the lead in taxing digital service companies where the EU and the US are still only talking about doing something. Some of the digital giants making things tough for traditional high street retailers or acting irresponsibly on social media platforms yet paying little in tax will now be forced to make a bigger contribution to UK plc.

Essex , Middlesex and Wessex. The South Saxons were a Germanic tribe that settled in the region from the North German Plain during the 5th and 6th centuries. The earliest known usage of the term South Saxons Latin: The monastic chronicler who wrote up the entry classifying the invasion seems to have got his dates wrong; recent scholars have suggested he might have been a quarter of a century too late. Azure, six martlets or The flag of Sussex consists of six gold martlets, or heraldic swallows , on a blue background, blazoned as Azure, six martlets or.
Officially recognised by the Flag Institute on 20 May , its design is based on the heraldic shield of Sussex. The first known recording of this emblem being used to represent the county was in when cartographer John Speed deployed it to represent the Kingdom of the South Saxons. However it seems that Speed was repeating an earlier association between the emblem and the county, rather than being the inventor of the association.
It is now firmly regarded that the county emblem originated and derived from the coat of arms of the 14th century Knight of the Shire, Sir John de Radynden. The round-headed rampion, or Pride of Sussex is Sussex’s county flower Sussex by the Sea is regarded as the unofficial anthem of Sussex; it was composed by William Ward-Higgs in , perhaps originally from the lyrics of Rudyard Kipling ‘s poem entitled Sussex.
The county day, called Sussex Day, is celebrated on 16 June, the same day as the feast day of St Richard of Chichester, Sussex’s patron saint , whose shrine at Chichester Cathedral was an important place of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages. Sussex’s motto, We wunt be druv, is a Sussex dialect expression meaning ‘we will not be pushed around’ and reflects the traditionally independent nature of Sussex men and women.

The Lepe Country Park is on the cliff top above. At the back of the beach, and below the level of the cliff top, there are toilets, a cafe and a shop, useful facilities. The western part of the low, shore car park was not originally a beach but it was formerly the location where the Dark Water stream flowed out to sea. This stream now flows out just east of the Watch House and there is a road bridge accross it. This remained the situation until early in the 19th century when a new opening was made in about the middle of the valley.
The old, former eastern opening near Stone Point, had, earlier, been the result of deflection of the stream channel by flint shingle moving eastward, i. Examination of old maps suggest that this would have taken place in the 18th century or before.
